A day of off-piste skiing in Montgenèvre, where a descent can start in France and finish in Italy — where lunch earns a few bonus points! Montgenèvre is part of the Milky Way ski area, a vast French-Italian domain stretching all the way to Sestriere. There’s off-piste terrain for a wide range of abilities, with plenty to explore: Rocher de l’Aigle, the Doire valley, the Gondrans area and La Plane, among others… The group’s ability and wishes, the conditions and your guide’s instinct will shape our route choices, with safety taking priority. Montgenèvre is also an excellent place for freerando, a mix of off-piste skiing and ski touring that lets us reach even quieter areas with the right equipment and enjoy the best of both activities!
Your off-piste ski day in Montgenèvre
We meet at 8:45am, equipped and ready to go! We’ll confirm the meeting point the day before: usually in Montgenèvre, but perhaps directly in Sauze d’Oulx or Sestriere if conditions are better on the Italian side. A quick chat, a check of our avalanche safety equipment, and we’re off.
Our first runs will stay close to the pistes, giving us time to warm up our legs, see how everyone skis and get a feel for the day’s conditions. Then we’ll explore more of the local terrain: Rocher de l’Aigle, Grand Charvia, the Doire valley, Gondrans, La Plane and plenty of other unnamed runs… Some routes may involve a short walk with skis on our backpacks.
If we’ve agreed on the freerando option with the whole group the day before, we’ll also bring climbing skins to reach quieter areas. One climb to cross into another valley or several shorter climbs: we’ll adapt to the day’s possibilities and the group’s energy.
To refuel, we’ll stop at a mountain restaurant, perhaps on the Italian side, or enjoy a picnic from our backpacks. We’ll agree on this before the outing, although the prospect of a good plate of pasta or a pizza might influence the discussion!
Throughout the descents, I’ll give instructions suited to the terrain and a few tips to help you feel more confident. We’ll take time to rest, regroup at carefully chosen spots and enjoy the scenery too. If snow coverage and conditions allow, a long descent to La Vachette or Cervières, with transport back arranged beforehand, could turn the day into a little ski journey.
Around 4pm, after one last descent, it’ll be time to say our goodbyes.
A few off-piste areas in Montgenèvre
- Rocher de l’Aigle: open slopes and several variations for linking lovely turns in a high-altitude setting.
- Grand Charvia and La Plane: a short walk with skis on our backpacks opens up beautiful slopes, some of them steeper.
- The Doire valley: a long, classic run with straightforward access.
- The Gondrans area: off-piste runs close to the lifts and plenty of freerando possibilities to explore further.
- La Vachette and Cervières: long descents down to the valley, with transport back to arrange, for a proper ski journey to round off the day.
