Multi-pitch climbing weekend in the Calanques
The scents of the Mediterranean scrub, lapping waves, calling gulls and tall pines tucked into the cliffs… Can you picture it? Climbing in the Calanques is something of a pilgrimage to one of France’s climbing meccas, with an extraordinary atmosphere between rock and turquoise water.
From traverses just above the sea to the overhangs of Cap Canaille and pocketed slabs, the scenery and climbing styles are wonderfully varied. The routes also tell the story of these cliffs, explored by generations of climbers and mountaineers.
This weekend is an invitation to discover the Calanques and enjoy climbing for the sheer pleasure of it: two days tailored to you, with time to look around between holds.
Day 1 — Sea views at Cap Canaille
- We get to know each other and discuss your expectations before heading out for a multi-pitch climb at Cap Canaille. It’s a chance to discover its cliffs and their atmosphere above the Mediterranean, on a route suited to the group. We find our rhythm, work on technique where helpful and enjoy the climbing. If you’d like to lead some pitches, we’ll discuss this and choose suitable terrain.
Day 2 — Discover the charm of En-Vau
- We head to En-Vau or another Calanques venue, depending on the conditions. The walk through the Mediterranean scrub is part of the experience, before we reach the cliffs above the turquoise water. We climb a multi-pitch route, perhaps linking it with another depending on the group’s pace and appetite: a chance to discover the character of the local classics, whose grades aren’t always kind to a climber’s ego!
This programme gives you a feel for the weekend. The order of the days, venues and routes will adapt to the weather, wind, sea conditions and access arrangements. Starting right above the water is a treat we enjoy only when conditions allow.
