Bel Serre Couloir - Pelvoux

A summit meeting with the Horizon Rando team: La Blanche from Pelvoux, an untouched couloir near La Rouya and a glorious feast of powder!

Since we clearly have no imagination and don’t really know how to do much else, today we’re going skiing. The idea is to strengthen the bonds of our Horizon Rando team. And what better way than with a “summit meeting”!

Conditions are pretty much optimalesque at the moment, with a snowpack as stable as we’ve rarely seen in recent years. You only have to look up at the mountains to realise that this year, everything is skiable!

Today, the plan is simple: we want five-star skiing, not too much effort on the way up, no ridiculously early start and no late finish… A proper lazy-day plan!

We head off to explore around La Blanche, above the Pelvoux ski resort. The lifts help us maintain an excellent average speed for the first part of the day. Much appreciated.

After passing over the summit of La Blanche, we head towards the Bel Serre ridge, where the Couloir de la Rouya begins. Our plan is to drop into another couloir about 100 m before it. A quick look from the top: it’s nicely filled in, apart from a very reasonable 100-metre rock-scraping session at the start. Plan approved!

We keep an eye out for sharks lurking beneath the surface on the first section, then it’s quickly time to let loose in this untouched couloir, just a stone’s throw from the much more popular Couloir de la Rouya. A glorious powder feast all the way down into the Vallon du Sélé, from where we simply let ourselves glide gently back to Pelvoux.

Easy does it.
