North Couloir, Etendard du Combeynot

Ski touring in the Vallon du Fontenil with Johan, Florent and Julien: perfect powder, sunshine and just enough steep terrain below the Étendard!

Skier in very deep snow on the slopes of the Étendard

What can you say about the conditions at the moment? We’re flirting with perfection every single day! Plenty of snow, excellent quality, and above all nicely stuck to the mountain, desperately stable weather, enough cold to keep the powder powdery, and no wind (we don’t like that).

When you work as a mountain guide, you generally avoid making wild promises — there’s always some uncertainty about the conditions. But right now, it’s actually pretty difficult to find bad skiing unless you really go looking for it! So things are shaping up rather nicely for Johan, Florent and Julien.

Taking our geographical constraints into account, today we focus our efforts on the Vallon du Fontenil, in the Combeynot massif, an area with plenty of possibilities… The brothers are all good skiers with some ski touring experience. So the idea is to ski something “a little steep”, but not too steep! We’ll go and see what we can find on the slopes of Pointe de l’Étendard, overlooking the Vallon du Fontenil.

First, climb…

Enjoy the sunshine at the top…

And then DOWWWWWN!

As low as possible, of course...
