Pointes de skis au-dessus d’un couloir enneigé de l’Aiguillas, entre les rochers.

Even amid the excitement as the pack devoured its food in the Gourenq, we’d all spotted, out of the corner of an eye, that perfect couloir running along the eastern side of the Aiguillas…
A little last-minute freedom, and here I am back on the slopes of the Aiguillas! With yesterday’s lovely skin track and the prospect of a pretty tasty descent, climbing back up is almost easy. Though my aching muscles keep reminding me of my sorry lack of training!
Back above the couloir
After a good couple of hours of transcendental meditation, I’m back on the sunny shoulder where we stopped yesterday. Today, I won’t go much higher: I can enter the couloir from here.
A fox has made use of yesterday’s tracks for its own little trip to the Aiguillas, probably followed by a good nap in the sun!
The east-facing entrance has already taken a beating from the sunshine. Not ideal. But that section only accounts for 50 vertical metres. After that, the couloir itself faces due north!
A thousand metres of descent, straight down the good stuff
The rest lives up to expectations! Despite my thighs begging for a break, I find it hard to stop!
To round things off, the couloir opens onto broad slopes and a perfect larch forest all the way to the track. A thousand vertical metres, no messing about, straight down the steep stuff — and just the right amount of steep!
