Reychard Ridge

Ski touring in the Écrins with Manu: heading for the Crête de Reychard after a metre of fresh snow, followed by a superb powder descent through the Bois Noir.

Crête de Reychard

When Manu comes to ski in the area, I usually know we can count on a good, heavy snowfall right before he arrives!! We’ve even had to evacuate an area before because of an overly intense easterly wind... No easterly wind this time, but a generous 1-meter dusting of powder—just what winter needs. Of course, we’re steering clear of our original plans and staying safely on slopes that are unlikely to give way under our skis! Let’s not forget that just two days earlier, the avalanche danger level was at its highest, and that some villages in the Oisans were cut off by historic avalanches!

Today’s hike will be the Reychard Ridge, a classic route in the mountain range that climbs a wooded ridge until it emerges from the forest… known for being relatively low-risk, as long as you don’t go for any crazy routes!

The sun is out, there are a few tracks ahead of us, but it should be pretty easy to find some fun today!

Better and better equipped to blend in completely with the winter landscape

Vue sur la veste Lagoped

Today, Manu is rediscovering a whole bunch of muscles he has but that he hardly ever uses—except when we get together! It’s totally worth it. The snack at the summit—the highlight of any good day in the mountains—will taste even better!

After bravely enduring the lukewarm sunshine of the Hautes-Alpes, all that remains is for us to boldly brave the chill of the local "dreuse"...

After a few turns on the wooded ridge, I suggest to Manu that we take a shortcut through the Bois Noir, which today is immaculately white. We soon find ourselves facing a complete lack of tracks in this deep, fresh snow… not easy.
