Back with Maxence in Puy-Saint-Vincent: deep powder on the Reychard Ridge, a quiet Narreyroux valley and some seriously heavy snow to finish!

Back with Maxence again. Conditions couldn’t be more different from last year, when we were linking descent after descent on perfect spring corn. This year, Maxence is based in Puy-Saint-Vincent.
For our first day together, conditions are impressive! The latest storm has dropped around 60 cm of powder, and probably even more higher up in the mountains… The rain line climbed pretty high too, so there’s no point hoping for great skiing below 1,600 m — a polite way of saying that below that, it’s crap!
Since Max has a lift pass for Puy, I suggest heading for the Reychard Ridge on a ski tour, starting directly from the Puy-Saint-Vincent ski area. We might as well sneak in a little run on the descent towards Narreyroux! Good call: we drop into a huge cloud of powder, gradually getting heavier but still excellent to ski all the way down into the valley…
From there, we put the skins on and head towards the hamlet of Narreyroux and the Reychard Ridge, just to get the legs working again! A 500 m climb in almost complete solitude, surrounded by a magical winter landscape… The silence feels pretty good, far away from the bustle of the ski resort.
We stop at around 2,300 m — that’s enough for today. I suggest to Max that we ski all the way down, fully aware that the snow won’t exactly be first-class all the way to the valley, but there should still be plenty of good stuff along the way!
The descent comes in two parts: very good and good down to 1,600 m, then heavy and very heavy all the way to the bottom… But the feeling of having had a great day still wins out! Back via the cross-country ski trail and one rather improbable bit of hitchhiking…
