Skitouring Montgenèvre

With Guillaume, we leave Champcella in pouring rain, hoping to salvage a day of ski touring. By the time we park in Montgenèvre, it’s coming down as snow.

A ski tourer in orange and blue breaks trail below snow-covered trees and rocks in Montgenèvre.

When I run through the day’s options with Guillaume, there’s one I’m giving very serious thought to: settling into a bistro! We’re leaving Champcella in absolutely pouring rain, so the odds of finding good skiing don’t look great. Still, we’re keeping the faith!

The strategy is simple: drive as high as we can and get as little of a soaking as possible. A hundred metres from Montgenèvre it’s still raining, but the cars coming the other way have snow piled on their roofs. Looking good! And then, miraculously, we park in Montgenèvre in a deluge of snowflakes. Yesss!
