We’d originally planned to go climbing, but at the last minute we decided to go hiking instead. So we headed to Ceillac for a hike around Lake Saint Anne. I have a few ideas in mind—we’ll see what works once we get there. We decide to stay in the sun on the very inviting Tête du Girardin. The snow has been heavily blown away on this side, and the ridge is completely bare! The Girardin is a truly unique peak. A long, flat, lunar-like ridge—you wouldn’t expect that from below!
As you ride along the ridge between Queyras and Ubaye, you can’t help but be drawn to those beautiful, sun-drenched slopes on the Ubaye side… However, if you go down that way, you’ll have to climb back up via the Col Tronchet because our car is parked on the Queyras side!!
From the summit, I decide to take the southeast-facing couloir, which isn’t very steep (35°). We ski down its left side, which is very inviting and stable. The right side, on the other hand, has snowdrifts that are best avoided! Once out of the couloir, magnificent slopes of dreamy powder await us. Bingo! We then take a shortcut to end up below Col Tronchet. Since we took the shortcut early, we only have 150 meters to climb back up—that’s fine!
Behind us, the long Tronchet valley awaits us, completely untouched—not bad at all! Top-notch powder, only slightly compacted in the last 200 meters through the forest, and we reach the Ceillac trail, which takes us back to the car. We’ve come full circle—and in style!
