Ski Tour to Les Orres

A first taste of ski touring in Les Orres with Clément, Chloé and Cyril: Grand Vallon, col de Terre Rouge, an airy ridge and deep powder in the woods.

Chloé carves her turns down a slope of cold snow in the Grand Vallon, in Les Orres.

A day of exploring ski touring with Clément, Chloé, and Cyril. We set out from Les Orres, where—thanks to the ski touring pass—we have direct access to a beautiful run.

First turns in the Grand Vallon

Setting out as usual with several plans up my sleeve, I opt for a direct descent into the Grand Vallon from the summit of Les Marmottes. Everyone (except me!) is discovering the joys of off-piste skiing today... Landmarks to find, thrills to experience!

The first half of the descent is a delight, with a soft blanket of flat slopes that are a pleasure to ski! Toward the bottom, the snow conditions are more variable, but everyone handles it well!

Terre Rouge Pass and a short, exposed ridge

At around 1,900 m, we put our skins back on to climb toward the Col de Terre Rouge and thus bypass the Boussolenc. It’s a chance to try our first switch-backs—in very different styles! On the climb, we travel through the seasons!!

Above the pass, we continue toward an unnamed peak, which we reach after a short ski carry and an easy, exposed ridge hike. Not a breath of wind at the summit—we settle in for a well-deserved snack!

Before diving into the beautiful descent that awaits us on the north face, we take a short break...

A mischievous cloud is trying to spoil our descent. But patience pays off: the sun is back!

Powder snow in the woods and leg work

Next, we head deep into the woods, through magnificent, deep powder that really gets your thighs working! We manage to wind our way through this vast forest, always finding sections that are great for skiing. What a treat!

Below 1,900 m, things get a little trickier: the powder gives way to a crust. We reach a forest trail that takes us back to the car—a perfect finish to really work those thigh muscles!
