Multipitch climbing Meije : Nous partirons dans l'ivresse

With Antoine and Frank, I climb Nous partirons dans l’ivresse on the Meije: an approach to Promontoire hut, superb pitches and abseils in evening light.

After yesterday’s little warm-up on the Tête des Fétoules, which ended at nightfall, it seems only fair to treat ourselves to a gentle approach day, with a little entertaining climbing thrown in… Just to fill part of the afternoon…!!! What a good joke!

I do love seeing Antoine on the hut benches in the evening, eyes shining, admitting over a beer: “I’m a little tired now.” A word that only enters his vocabulary during his mountain holidays!!

Nous partirons dans l’ivresse on the Meije

For our little approach, then, we head up to the Promontoire hut. Our afternoon climbing will be on the southwest face of the Meije, on one of the area’s gems: Nous partirons dans l’ivresse…

The climbing delivers everything it promises. Despite our stiff thighs and calves, we haul all three bodies to the top with great pleasure… The day strikes a fine balance between relaxation and keeping things moving. Since we didn’t get up early, finishing the route meant we couldn’t hang around! A good collective burst of speed through the final pitches and the abseils, enjoying the fiery evening light…

Unlike yesterday, our home for the night is close by. No endless descent today… We spend a quiet evening with two fellow guides who have come to do maintenance work on the south face. We still find the energy to do justice to the beers and génépi we carried up, before some much-needed rest!
