Freerando à Pelvoux vers la Blanche : conversions au Chastellet, saumon et vin blanc avec les amis, puis une descente vers Puy-Aillaud meilleure que prévu.
After two days in Puy-Saint-Vincent and kilometres of powder through the woods, we head higher and poke our noses out of the larches! No need to go far... With their forward base camp in Les Vigneaux, it would be a shame not to explore Pelvoux, a modest-sized ski area with some lovely opportunities for off-piste skiing and freeride ski touring.
The téléski des Crêtes opens today. Could there be something good waiting for us up there?
Once we arrive, the verdict is clear: the wind has hammered the area, turning that delicious powder into a stubborn wind crust that’s far from easy to ski... So we don’t linger on Pelvoux’s off-piste runs. We leave the top of the lift for a tour towards la Blanche. The sun is out, all is well!
The ski touring climb towards the Croix du Chastellet gives us plenty of chances to practise kick turns... although some prefer to strap their skis to their packs! Beyond the cross, a short, airy but straightforward ridge adds a little atmosphere...
Fortunately, we’ve packed a multicultural snack to recover from all that excitement... Karl brings the salmon, I bring the white wine!
Just the thing to get everyone ready for the descent to Puy-Aillaud... Unlike my last outing with Tom three weeks earlier, today I choose a south-facing descent, better suited to the conditions.
The skiing is better than expected... I’d already promised my friends some perfect crust, but we end up finding some very good sections, even if the changing snow keeps our enthusiasm in check!
We finish the day at a little restaurant in Puy-Aillaud. In the sunshine, naturally!
