Two days ski touring with Seb and Oxo: powder above Fonds de Cervières, a welcome break in the clouds and a relaxed tour on glacier Noir in the Écrins.
Two days of making it up as we go with Seb and Oxo, who have come over from the Vercors to get a little deeper into ski touring, something they dabble in back home... We pushed the trip back by a day, and a good thing too! Yesterday, it was coming down in buckets in the mountains, with powder higher up!
We head towards Fonds de Cervières in search of our powder fix... A mischievous cloud will get the better of most skiers’ motivation in the area that day. To be fair, we climb from clear blue skies into a complete whiteout. Not exactly encouraging... We even pass a group skiing almost hand in hand so they don’t lose each other!
Below the summit of Grand Vallon, we’re sheltered from the wind. I suggest to Seb and Oxo that we sit tight and wait for a break in the clouds... Good call: after half an hour of patience, we’re rewarded handsomely!
Looks like we’ll just have to do a second run! Here are the photos...
The next day, despite a few lingering aches from yesterday’s 1,200 m of elevation gain, the Vercors crew is still up for a lovely tour. We head onto glacier Noir to feast our eyes on the scenery, a perfect place to soak up the high-mountain atmosphere, sheltered from the wind! No chasing performance today: we simply enjoy the climb, chatting or quietly admiring the great north faces of the Écrins massif...
A leisurely bite to eat at the far end of the glacier, then we head down towards Pré de Madame Carle... Skiing through a postcard!
