Two days of ice climbing with Mihail, Manu, Frank and Mathieu in Ceillac and Cervières, adapting our plans to fresh snow and each climber’s level.

Two days of ice climbing with Mihail, Manu, Frank and Mathieu. A first taste for almost everyone. Conditions aren’t straightforward after a substantial snowfall, but we still find plenty to enjoy!
Day 1 — Top-roping and the Y de droite in Ceillac
We warm up at the foot of Les Formes du Chaos to get acquainted with the ice. The forearms are already feeling it! We don’t overdo it, because a proper outing awaits us this afternoon: the Y de droite.
Manu and Mihail are comfortable enough to take turns leading under my supervision. I rope up with Mathieu and Frank. We have the Y to ourselves—not bad! A rope team ahead of us has cleared away some of the ice. Everyone finishes the Y with varying amounts left in the tank!
Day 2 — Ice climbing in Cervières
Looking for a sector with something for everyone and suitable for the day’s snow conditions—avalanche danger level 4—I choose Cervières. A good call: the ice is holding up well at this lovely single-pitch venue. There’s something for every level, from the beginner waterfall to the Cascade du Bourget and the ice pillar… Even a little dry-tooling!
Everyone gives their arms a workout at their own level. A peaceful day, away from the crowds, with a view that’s not too shabby!
Practical Info / Route Topo
Day 1 — First top-ropes and the Y de droite in Ceillac
- Mihail, Manu, Frank, Mathieu and I start with top-roping at the foot of Les Formes du Chaos before climbing the Y de droite. Manu and Mihail take turns leading under my supervision; Mathieu and Frank climb on my rope.
Day 2 — Adapting to conditions in Cervières
- With avalanche danger at level 4 that day, I choose the Cervières sector. A beginner waterfall, the Cascade du Bourget, an ice pillar and a little dry-tooling give everyone something to work on at their own level, away from the crowds.
