Skiing couloir in Queyras

A day skiing with my brother around Pic Traversier in the Queyras: quiet couloirs, powder turns and much better snow than we had dared to expect.

A family outing with my brother today — always a pleasure! We set off without great expectations, hoping to find some decent snow higher up, knowing that rain has reached quite a way up the mountains.

The Saint-Véran lifts give us an inexpensive ride to above 2,500 metres. We then head towards Pic Traversier, which is attracting plenty of ski tourers today. Time to switch on the powder-and-untracked-snow radar!

A little way from the crowds, we find a short couloir. After a slightly rocky entrance, it delivers some very good skiing.

We head back up to ski the neighbouring couloir, but on the ascent, another line dropping towards the Clausis valley catches our eye. We enter cautiously: there’s some accumulated snow at the top. We adapt our descent, using the most sheltered regrouping spots we can identify.

Excellent skiing all the way down to the narrowing of the Clausis valley!

The skiing was really just an excuse to spend a day together in the Queyras. It turned out to be much better than expected!
