Off-Piste Skiing in Pra Loup | Two Deep Powder Days

Two wild days in Pra Loup with the crew: deep snow, seriously fat skis, stormy winds and plenty of off-piste skiing to finish the week!

After a great start to the week in Fouillouse, our hopes of a hut-to-hut adventure — or even any ski touring at all — are wiped out by the weather and avalanche conditions towards the end of the week. Anyway, I get the feeling that if I want to avoid a Viking rebellion, I’d better keep the uphill to an absolute minimum for our last two days!

From our gastronomic base camp in Jausiers, we’ll therefore finish with two days of off-piste skiing in Pra Loup. Given the amount of snow that has fallen, Eddi opts for a winning strategy: rent the fattest skis he can find — the Powabungas! Tor takes a more Epicurean approach, deciding that he should be content with what he already has, in a spirit of frugality and moderation… So he’ll be riding his touring skis… Karlito, meanwhile, will be escorting us from the pistes today…

Conditions are wild and call for a great deal of caution. We stick to off-piste terrain close to the resort. There’s some serious wading through the snow, even armed with extra-fat skis, and we have to resist the temptation to venture onto anything too steep.

The next day, things aren’t getting any better! More snow has fallen overnight and we’re greeted at the top by storm-force winds. Just staying on the piste without getting lost is already becoming a challenge! We retreat to the mountain restaurant and wait for a better window. Coffee turns into beer, beer into lunch, and somehow we manage to kill a couple of hours up there… Then a brief clearing appears. Time to go!

Today, Karl is properly fat-equipped. We head off for one final run away from the pistes. A fine way to round off our six days together!
