With Guillaume, I climb the Pilier Candau on the Gandolière: an autumn outing in the Étançons, fine rock, cold fingers and sunshine waiting at the summit.

A quick autumn outing in the Étançons with Guillaume. We’re torn between the South Pillar and the North Pillar. The short approach to the North Pillar—the Pilier Candau on the Gandolière—finally settles the matter.
We do get some morning sunshine on this lovely climb, but it disappears after three pitches, leaving us with painfully cold fingers… Fortunately, after the demanding lower pitches, the rest flows much more easily. We catch up with the sun at the top, delighted by the quality of the climbing.
As usual in the Écrins, a second day’s worth of effort begins when it’s time to get home!
