Bruyère Ridge

With Armelle and Guillaume, I head to the Arêtes de la Bruyère for a tailored introduction to mountaineering, with rock climbing and views of the Écrins.

Armelle climbing on the Arêtes de la Bruyère, with a lake and patches of snow below.

Guillaume and Armelle contacted me to try their hand at mountaineering during a short three-day trip. Before they head out to the high mountains in the coming days, I suggested a beautiful rock-climbing route: the ridges of La Bruyère, in the Cerces, facing the Écrins.

Day 1 — Finding Your Bearings on the Bruyère Ridges

Even though they haven’t climbed in years, they’re really tempted by the adventure. And that works out well: there are few sections on this ridge that are truly mandatory. You can adapt to the terrain and your motivation to plan a trip that’s just right for you.

After getting past the first pitch—which wasn't easy—Armelle and Guillaume are gradually finding their bearings on this exposed ridge!

Extreme climbing on slabs that are almost perfectly smooth. The photo speaks for itself (taken with almost no editing!)

A ridge, a lake, some gas... just the usual, you know!

Picnic in front of the giant postcard!
