With Ivan, an improvised ice climbing outing in Freissinières turns into a full mountain day: nearly 550 metres up Au-delà des Ombres above Gramusat.

It’s almost become a ritual: Ivan and I meet up every six months! Our last outing on the South Pillar of Barre Noire really brought us together as a climbing team and gave us momentum for the next adventure!
For this year’s ice climbing outing, I suggest we head to Freissinières without a fixed objective, leaving plenty of room for adapting and improvising.
We eventually head towards Gramusat, into the Y sector, to climb one of its two branches. Three parties are already climbing in the area. Since everything is going smoothly for us, I suggest to Ivan that we carry on upwards to reach the upper tier and find some peace and quiet! No pressure, keeping the option of descending at any time.
Caught up in the climbing, we eventually follow Au-delà des Ombres all the way to the top—nearly 550 metres! The route is superb and varied, with steep ice, gentler ice, a couloir and a mixed ramp… A proper mountain route that keeps us busy all day!
