With Manu and Cyril, I traverse the Meije Orientale to the Aigle hut: snow, rock, a few nerves and crêpes round off a memorable day high in the Écrins.

No taking it easy today with Manu and Cyril! The idea is to reach the Aigle hut by traversing the Meije Orientale.
It’s an ambitious plan, I know, but I’m beginning to understand my two characters, and I have confidence in them!
We head towards Col du Pavé for a little morning warm-up on slopes that are already fairly steep. A short pitch of rock climbing above the bergschrund gives access to the snow slopes leading to Brèche Maximin Gaspard.
The view of what lies ahead leaves Manu thoroughly perplexed. He regularly treats us to: “You’re completely mad! What’s wrong with you two?”
Even when his head says no, Manu’s feet say yes! And he negotiates the challenges of this wonderfully atmospheric route without too much trouble.
Cyril, who is feeling rather more comfortable, savours this wild corner of the Oisans. In the day’s conditions, it offers some… interesting passages! In particular, a few short traverses across the remains of cornices call for careful balance.
Fortunately, Louis’s crêpes are waiting to restore us before the descent to the valley!
