Three big descents in La Grave with JB and Oliv’: the Fréaux couloir, Chirouze and La Voûte. Cold snow, sunshine and three grins that just won’t fade.
Today I’m guiding JB and Oliv’ in La Grave. The two mates already know the Vallons, having skied them a few times. Today’s idea is to get a taste of La Grave’s big off-piste itineraries.
Chancel, the Banane and the Fréaux couloir
We start with a little warm-up in Chancel and the Banane to get acquainted. Both skiers look solid and confident, and we hit it off straight away! Next up: the Fréaux couloir! We sideslip the steep, heavily bumped entrance, then everything below is excellent: cold, smooth snow all the way down… Around 11 a.m., we’re back on the cable car, already grinning from ear to ear!
Left-hand Chirouze: our skis are hungrier than we are
Back at the top, we were planning to eat, but for now our ski tips seem hungrier than our stomachs! So we head up to the Dôme de la Lauze and set off down left-hand Chirouze. On the glacier, we find some lovely untracked sections. What a treat! Then we drop into steeper, more tracked terrain, but the snow is excellent here too! Both mates negotiate the trickiest passage easily, keeping their skis on and without using the rope… A quick hitchhike from the bottom and we’re back in La Grave. This time it’s 2 p.m., and we’re ravenous!
La Voûte to complete the hat-trick
After a hearty snack, we head back up for one last run… La Voûte it is! An exceptional setting, with nobody else around… And the same excellent conditions we’ve enjoyed on the other itineraries…
Needless to say, the weather was amazing, it wasn’t cold, and there was hardly a soul anywhere on the mountain!
By the end of this incredible day, there are three grins firmly glued to our faces.
