Two days of ice climbing in Oisans: a snowy Colère du Ciel with Quentin, then Chacal Bondissant at Alpe d’Huez with Guillaume and welcome sunshine.

Barely back from the far reaches of the Ubaye, I’m off to Oisans for two days of ice climbing.
Colère du Ciel with Quentin: we needed a windscreen wiper!
A first day with Quentin on Colère du Ciel. Well, today we’ve brought the wrong accessories! We didn’t need ice axes, we needed a windscreen wiper! There’s a bit of clearing to do on Colère du Ciel after the recent snowfall, and the conditions are a little hostile… It’s winter!
Chacal Bondissant with Guillaume at Alpe d’Huez
On Sunday, I’m with Guillaume, who’s made a flying visit from the capital to swing his axes into some ice. We head off to discover the Alpe d’Huez climbing area together: not exactly wilderness, but plenty of ice!
It’s Sunday, and it’s busy. With no particular route in mind, we climb the first icefall that catches our eye and isn’t too crowded. Conveniently, it’s also the closest. We later learn that it’s called Chacal Bondissant!
The local speciality: sunshine that warms you up halfway through the afternoon. We’re certainly not complaining!
Practical Info / Route Topo
Day 1 — Colère du Ciel with Quentin
- Ice climbing on Colère du Ciel after fresh snowfall. We have to clear the snow to find axe placements: perhaps we should have swapped our ice axes for a windscreen wiper!
Day 2 — Chacal Bondissant at Alpe d’Huez
- Guillaume arrives from the capital for a day of ice climbing at Alpe d’Huez. We choose Chacal Bondissant, the closest icefall and one that isn’t too crowded. Sunshine warms us up halfway through the afternoon: gladly accepted!
