Ice Climbing - Argentera

Ice climbing in Val Argentera with Fred and Sonia: Altro Volto del Pianeta and Very Nice in good condition, plenty of axe placements and burning arms!

Climber on an icefall between the rocky walls of Val Argentera, beneath a blue sky.

Today, Fred, Sonia and I are making the most of the good ice conditions in Val Argentera, near Sestriere. I’m happy to discover this valley with them, especially as two legendary icefalls are apparently in condition: Altro Volto del Pianeta and Very Nice… Always welcome when good ice is in short supply!

The icefalls are in good condition, and all the climbers who’ve passed through over the last few days have left plenty of axe placements, making our ascent that much smoother! Just as well, because our arms are already burning enough!

Neither icefall gives Sonia and Fred much trouble: they cruise up despite having done little ice climbing in recent years… Well done, both of you!

Day 1 — Altro Volto del Pianeta and Very Nice

  • Discover Val Argentera with Fred and Sonia, climbing two icefalls in good condition: Altro Volto del Pianeta and Very Nice. The many axe placements left by previous climbers make progress easier, though our arms still get a workout! Sonia and Fred cruise up despite having climbed little ice in recent years.
